Lancashire
Documentary wedding photography across Lancashire by WPJA UK Photographer of the Year, Ian Bursill.
Now Based in Lancashire
As a wedding photographer Lancashire couples can trust, I bring twenty years of experience to every wedding I document. I’m Ian Bursill — a documentary wedding photojournalist who has spent two decades photographing weddings at some of the finest venues across England, Wales, and Scotland. Over that time, I’ve documented more than 450 weddings, won the WPJA UK Photographer of the Year award, and at my peak was ranked 1st in the UK, 2nd in Europe, and 3rd in the world for wedding photojournalism.
I recently relocated to Rishton, in the heart of Lancashire, and this is now my home. After nearly two decades working at prestigious venues across the country — from Georgian manor houses and medieval halls to restored barns, country estates, and boutique hotels — I’m bringing that depth of experience to Lancashire’s extraordinary wedding scene.
I’ve already had the privilege of working at Stanley House Hotel & Spa in Mellor, Lancashire’s Hotel Wedding Venue of the Year, and at the multi-award-winning Beeston Manor near Hoghton. Both confirmed what I already knew: Lancashire has venues that rival anything I’ve worked at in twenty years of shooting across the UK, and I’m genuinely excited to be documenting weddings here.
Why It Matters
Every one of my 450 weddings was at a venue I was photographing for the first time at some point. A grand estate in Nottinghamshire. A clifftop ceremony in Wales. A castle in Scotland. A candlelit barn in Warwickshire. Each one demanded that I read the light, the space, and the atmosphere within minutes of arriving — and deliver photographs that did justice to the setting and the couple.
That’s the skill that twenty years builds. Not familiarity with one building, but the ability to walk into any venue, in any light, at any time of year, and know exactly where to be, exactly when to be there, and exactly how to capture what matters. Whether I’ve worked at your venue before or not, you’re getting a photographer who has spent two decades adapting to new environments and producing exceptional work in every single one.
The couples at Stanley House and Beeston Manor didn’t book me because I’d shot there before. They booked me because of the calibre of my work across hundreds of other venues. That’s what I bring to every Lancashire wedding — not venue-specific experience, but world-class photographic experience.
“Great documentary-style wedding photography is an art that is hugely in demand, and British photographer Ian Bursill has just proved that he is one of the best in the world at delivering this service.”

How I Work
My approach is simple and it hasn’t changed in twenty years: I don’t direct your day. I don’t stage moments. I don’t ask your guests to rearrange themselves. I move quietly through your wedding, observing and anticipating, capturing the real moments as they happen — the nervous glances before the ceremony, the laughter during the speeches, the tears nobody else saw, the first dance, the party getting started, the joy on the dance floor.
Ninety-eight percent of my coverage is completely unposed. You’ll get a brief fifteen-minute couple portrait session and up to eight essential family group photographs, done quickly and warmly. Beyond that, I don’t interfere with your day in any way. The most common compliment I receive is when guests assume I’m a friend of the couple who happens to have a camera. That tells me I’ve done my job.
The result is a collection of photographs that tells the honest story of your day. Not a curated highlight reel for Instagram. Your story, as it actually happened, captured with twenty years of experience and the eye of someone who has been internationally recognised for this exact style of work.
Lancashire Venues
I’ve had the privilege of documenting weddings at Stanley House Hotel & Spa and Beeston Manor — two of Lancashire’s finest venues, both in the Ribble Valley. And I’m actively looking to build on that, because this county has an exceptional concentration of world-class wedding settings that deserve world-class photography.
Stanley House Hotel & Spa · Beeston Manor · Eaves Hall · Mitton Hall · Browsholme Hall · Wyresdale Park · Crow Wood Hotel · Bartle Hall · Stirk House · The Inn at Whitewell · Bashall Barn · The Villa at Wrea Green
The gold-highlighted venues are ones I’ve already worked at. The rest? I’d be thrilled to photograph a wedding at any of them.
