Sassy Blooms are an award-winning, sophisticated, bespoke floristry business in the East Midlands. Emma Naing works from her studio in the heart of the Charnwood Forest and serves Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and beyond.
I first met Emma from Sassy Blooms while exhibiting at a local wedding fair with her. Several months later, I had an enquiry from her best friend Tonia to see if I was available to document her wedding at Swancar Farm in Nottinghamshire and Emma had been kind enough to refer me to her. Thanks again for the referral, Emma!
On the day, Emma was not only the Maid of Honour at Tonia’s wedding – but she was also the florist. No pressure there then! Her floral arrangement work is fantastic, and I’ve included images from the wedding in with the interview below to showcase Emma’s wonderful work.
Can you tell us a little about your history?
Believe it or not, I’ve not been in the industry that long – this is my fourth year! Prior to that, I worked in insurance – I was Sales and Marketing Director for an insurance broker, but had long been disillusioned with the industry. I always had a love of flowers and had taken many hobby courses, and loved it so much I decided to take a career break and re-train as a florist and never looked back. We’ve won multiple awards in our short time, the latest being Wedding Florist of the Year 2019-20 for the East Midlands.
If the bride’s choice of flowers are not in season, can you provide them?
Yes, we can provide pretty much all flowers all year round. We champion British flowers during the summer months and use a couple of local growers within a few miles of our business (as well as growing our own). We also use several suppliers who can obtain flowers for us from Holland, Italy, Ireland, America, and far-flung places like Columbia and Ecuador!
Do you handle flower preservation? If not, are there people you can recommend to do this?
We have several companies we can supply details to brides if they wish to preserve their bouquet, and can provide the packaging and shipping service to those companies for an additional charge.
Brides can now preserve their bouquets in a multitude of ways, from the traditional replica bouquet set in a frame; to jewellery such as bracelet charms, necklaces, paperweights, resin letters and we can provide details of all these companies for our brides to choose.
Do you set up the flowers at the ceremony and the reception sites?
Yes, we set up all of the wedding flowers. We offer a full complete service, and we only do one wedding a day, so we are not limited by time or resource. A normal day for us would be delivering the bridal flowers, and usually buttonholes elsewhere, to the church to set up any flowers and then to the venue to set up the flowers (and table décor – we also offer a range of table styling items).
We would then head back to the church if there is anything that needs moving to the reception venue after the ceremony. We would also attend the reception venue the following day to clear down the flowers. Our bookings are for our exclusive service, so we stay and do what needs to be done until it’s done!
Do you provide a mock-up or sketch of your arrangements before the wedding?
We provide a mood board to all our brides (example attached) after they have booked with us. When we have ordered the flowers we also provide the bride with a mood board of the flowers we have picked, so they can visualise the colours. We are also one of the few florists who will send a picture to the bride of her bouquet after it’s been made (usually the day before the wedding).
Do you provide any other décor besides flowers?
Yes, we provide a range of table stylings such as candlesticks, tealights, place settings, entrance displays, welcome boards and other signage.
Do you help pin the boutonnières on the groom and groomsmen?
We use a small device which is similar to a safety pin which is attached to a small plastic t-shaped frame, this sits within the buttonhole so all that has to be done is the safety pin attaching. These are much more secure, less fiddly and they don’t spin round. We also offer a magnetic pin for ladies corsages.
What’s your unique selling point and sets you apart from others?
We like to think we have several things that set us apart from our competition.
- We only do one wedding a day, or weekend if it’s a large event. This gives the bride and groom complete comfort that we are 100% dedicated to their event.
- We believe that elegance is not a luxury. This means that luxury, stylish and sassy flowers should be affordable.
- We dare to be different and always go that extra mile. We view each wedding as if it was our own special day, and the standards we would hope to receive if it were.
Do you have any funny or embarrassing stories to share?
Not yet but I’m sure I’m due one LOL! 😊
Do you have any tips relevant to your industry for couples?
Florists generally are booked up a year in advance, particularly during peak season, so start your search for a florist early in your wedding planning process so you are not disappointed. Many people leave the florist booking till last on their list, but reputable florists will be booked up if you leave it too late.
Always arrange to meet with your florist if possible, after all, you will be getting to know each other often over the course of 12 months or more, so it’s really important that you gel and get on before you both agree to the booking! If you live far away then your florist should be happy to skype!
