The Quorn Country Hotel Wedding of Laura and Charlie.
The Quorn Country Hotel is a venue just a couple of miles down the road from me in Loughborough, so Laura and Charlie’s special day was a nice local wedding for a change. Not too many miles at all, I thought. I was wrong (in a nice way).
When I met with Laura & Charlie to discuss timings & logistics for the day, it was clear that it was going to be difficult to get over to the boys to record their preparations. It did emerge however that the boys were going to be playing golf in the morning to pass some of the time away and calm the nerves. I offered to tag along and grab some frames during their round and thoroughly enjoyed the long walk over 11 holes at Park Hill Golf Club in Seagrave. I haven’t swung a golf club in anger for about 12 years now since the birth of my eldest daughter but the experience got me thinking that I definitely need to get the cobwebs dusted off the clubs.
From there, I headed over to Quorn Country Hotel for the rest of the day’s proceedings. A great morning with the ladies during prep, a wonderfully emotive ceremony, some fab speeches and some amazing shapes were thrown on the dancefloor later on. Laura and Charlie have provided us with a few more words about their day below…
Our venues and why we chose them.
“We got married and had our reception at the Quorn Country Hotel, Quorn. We chose this venue for a number of reasons: it’s close to home; an ideal location for all of our friends and family; has great packages and great food options. But the main advantage was that we could get married, eat, party and sleep in the same location. On the plus side, Susan – the venue’s wedding coordinator – was fantastic, nothing was ever too much hassle even when visiting her with a huge list of questions!”
Our wedding theme.
“Our wedding style was simple and individual to our tastes. With our wedding being in May we wanted a bright summery colour so we opted for yellow. My Husband is a designer and very handy with Photoshop so he designed our wedding invites, table plan, place cards and menus. Local printing company M&B Print helped us bring them to life and everybody loved them. It was so nice to send something so special and also personal to our friends and family.
For our wedding favours we decided to go for retro sweets such as rhubarb and custards, cola cubes, blackjacks, flying saucers and many more in individual yellow candy striped bags, which went down an absolute treat!”
“I love photos but hate having my picture taken, we didn’t want the traditional 5000 family photos, lots of cheesy shots of us and a bossy photographer in the way all day so I thought I would have to do a lot of Googling to find the right person for the job – however we found Ian before we had even started looking!
On viewing the first venue, we arrived early for our appointment and were given a wedding album to look at from a previous bride and groom, we loved the photos and noticed Ian’s logo on the back. As soon as we got home we started viewing his website and his Facebook page. We arranged to meet with Ian at his home studio and at the end of the meeting Ian told us to go home and have a think about what we wanted to do. However, within 10 minutes of meeting Ian, we knew Ian was the man for the job!
Ian is a lovely guy and as my Husband says he’s like a Photo Ninja! He was even prepared to join the boys on the golf course on the morning of the wedding before shooting back over to Quorn where MUA Rochelle O’Brien, our Hairdresser Helen Sutcliffe, myself and the bridal party were preparing for the day. However it didn’t feel like have a photographer in the room, it felt like Ian was a guest, and he helped keep everyone relaxed, chatting and joking.
Everyone who spoke to Ian on the day said how lovely he is and that he wasn’t intrusive in any way. Everybody loves the final results of the photos but not as much as us! Ian has captured beautiful photographs of everybody, the photos truly reflect the relaxed atmosphere of the day and the photos are so beautiful it’s difficult to know which images to put in frames around the house!”
Other suppliers we used.
“We decided to go non-traditional with our wedding cake, we opted for a cake made of cheese. We both love cheese more than cake. Lynne from Captain and Cook – a little deli and café in Horncastle – helped us pick some amazing cheeses, some of which we hadn’t tried before. It looked amazing and was one of our favourite things about the wedding – we still had cheese in our freezer 5 months later!
Flowers by Sarah in Quorn supplied our flowers, she was brilliant and nothing was too much hassle. When the flowers arrived on the day they were a million times better than I imagined.
The Dress I opted for was a Stella York dress after seeing it in a magazine and tracking down the closest supplier to home (an hour away!). As soon as I put it on I knew it was the one! I love my dress but I am a little gutted I will never get to wear it again!
Makeup – I did a lot of research on makeup as originally I was going to do my own, but after finding Rochelle O’Brien I changed my mind! Rochelle made me feel and look like a million dollars! Rochelle is very talented and has a wonderful makeup kit. My bridesmaid had used Rochelle for her wedding and highly recommend her. She is a lovely person and helped make the wedding party feel very relaxed.
When it came to my hair, I knew I needed some help. I wanted to not have to worry about my hair for a whole day! Helen Sutcliffe is very talented and did a wonderful job with all of our hair and made everyone feel very relaxed.”
Any tips for other couples planning their own weddings?
- “The more you do at the start, the less stress it will be later, dates, venues and suppliers get booked up quickly, so prep as much as you can!”
- “If you don’t have one get a Pinterest account, there are so many pictures for inspiration you’ll soon find lots of ideas to help you on the way.”
- “People will interfere! They will tell you what you should and shouldn’t do and may put pressure on you to do things the way they want – remember it’s a day for you both and it should be the way you both want it. So smile, listen to their ideas but do what you want to do!”
- “The day will go so quickly so enjoy every moment!”
