Mansfield Avenue, the Leicester based wedding band, have agreed to feature in my wedding industry friends blogroll.
Mansfield Avenue’s lovely vocalist Natalie answers the ten questions I pose to all of the bands I feature here. I first worked with this energetic four-piece band in 2015 at Alex & Katherine’s wedding at Swancar Farm in Nottinghamshire. Boy, did they get the party rocking!
Can you tell us a little about your history? For example – when you formed, how you met, how long have you been playing weddings, how did you get into the wedding industry etc?
“The band is ran by myself (Natalie) and James. We met over in Bahrain whilst working in separate in-house bands on contract. Everyone on the Mansfield Avenue team has been playing for years in various different projects all over the world. We had never really explored the Wedding side of music before and fancied a change. When we decided to head back to UK Summer 2014 we decided that’s what we were going to do! After some research and hard work, Mansfield Avenue Band was launched Christmas time 2014.”
Who are your musical influences and how would you describe your style?
“We all have very eclectic music tastes. I was brought up on Motown and Soul whereas James grew up in a more rock/indie environment. Although it’s safe to say we now like pretty much everything!”
If you’re asked for a song that isn’t in your style would you work up an alternative version or just mirror the original as closely as possible?
“It depends really on what the couple wants. If they want it exactly like the original then that’s what we will do. Sometimes we get couples asking for the song to be toned down for the beginning of their first dance and then build up to get everyone dancing together! So we can do this as well! We are very flexible.”
How do you get a shy crowd dancing?
“Talking and a bit of banter always goes a long way! If you’re friendly and can have a laugh it generally makes people comfortable and willing to get up and join in with the fun!”
What kind of backup plan do you have for any kit malfunction?
“All of our equipment is very well looked after and used all time, so if we come across a problem we notice it straight away and fix it! We also bring a lot of spare equipment with us to every gig.”
What’s your policy in case of illness of one or more of the band members?
“We work with a large pool of professional musicians, so in the event of illness/holiday/emergency, there is always somebody who can step in last minute.”
Can prospective clients get to see you live before their wedding?
“Yes! And we love it when they do! It’s a great opportunity to meet the couple and for them to come and meet us. If they have any questions or just want to say hello, we do various gigs through out the year which enable them to do so.”
What are your favourite wedding venues in terms of layout and acoustics?
“Our favourite Wedding venue would have to be Swancar Farm Country House which is in Trowell, close to Nottingham. Everything about this venue is amazing and whenever we work there we feel welcome and well looked after. The venue itself is beautiful, the staff are professional and friendly, the food is amazing and the services which it has to offer are spot on!”
Do you have any funny or embarrassing stories to share?
“One of our musicians got egged once whilst loading in for a gig! It was Halloween and we were setting up for a Wedding in the middle of a city. Needless to say it was quite amusing, and possibly one of the most random things to happen pre-gig!”
Any tips for couples looking for a band for their wedding? No limit to the tips – the more the better!
- There are so many bands online that sometimes couples can be overwhelmed, so I guess to get a good idea of what you’re looking for is a good starting point. Ie how many players, music genre, what packages they offer.
- If it was myself I would want to see them play live.
- Also, I would look for the best band, for the best price and value. We offer a Full Entertainment Package for the whole day which is great, as couples only have to deal with one person regarding music/entertainment!
