Cookie Policy
Last updated: 11th October 2026
This page explains what cookies bursill.com uses, what they do, and how to control them. It sits alongside my Privacy Policy, which explains how I handle personal information generally.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They let a site remember things between pages and between visits — that you dismissed a banner, what you put in a form, or that you have been here before. Similar technologies such as pixels, tags, and local storage do much the same job, and everything on this page applies to them too.
Your choice
When you first visit bursill.com you will see a cookie banner. Only strictly necessary cookies are set before you make a choice. Analytics and advertising cookies are set only if you accept them.
You can change your mind at any time by clicking Cookie settings in the footer of any page, or by clearing cookies in your browser. Declining will not stop you browsing the site or reading anything on it. It may prevent my online enquiry forms working, because they are protected by Google reCAPTCHA — see below — in which case email or telephone will always reach me.
The cookies I use
Strictly necessary
These make the site work. They cannot be switched off and do not require your consent.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| ba-cookie-consent | bursill.com | Remembers your cookie choices. Stored in your browser as local storage rather than as a cookie, and never sent to me or to anyone else | 12 months |
Analytics
These tell me how many people visit, which pages they read, and where they arrive from. The data is aggregated, and I use it to work out which parts of the site are useful and which are not.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another | 2 years |
| _ga_<container ID> | Google Analytics | Maintains session state | 2 years |
| _gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors | 24 hours |
I have enabled IP anonymisation in Google Analytics. Google's own explanation of how it uses this data is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Advertising and remarketing
I advertise on Google. These cookies let me measure whether an advert led to an enquiry, and show my adverts to people who have visited the site before. If you decline them, you will still see adverts online — they simply will not be tailored based on your visit here.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| _gcl_au | Google Ads | Measures conversions from advert clicks | 90 days |
| IDE / DSID | Google (doubleclick.net) | Shows and measures my adverts on other websites | Up to 13 months |
| test_cookie | Google (doubleclick.net) | Checks whether your browser accepts cookies | 15 minutes |
Enquiry source
If you accept analytics or advertising cookies, the site also remembers how you first found it and how you most recently arrived, so that if you send me an enquiry I can see whether it came from an advert, a search or somewhere else. It records only a general description of the source (for example “Google Ads” or “Google organic”), the page you landed on and the date. It does not keep advert click identifiers or full web addresses.
Arrival from an advert is recorded only if you accept advertising cookies. Arrival from a search, another website or a tagged link is recorded only if you accept analytics cookies. If you later withdraw either consent, the matching information is deleted.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| ba-attribution | bursill.com | Remembers the source of your visit, the landing page and the date. Stored in your browser as local storage rather than as a cookie, and sent to me only as part of an enquiry you choose to submit | 90 days |
Security and spam prevention
I use Google reCAPTCHA on my enquiry and contact forms to tell real visitors apart from automated spam. It is loaded only on pages containing a form, not across the whole site.
reCAPTCHA works by observing how you interact with the page. To decide whether you are a person, it collects information including your IP address, browser and device characteristics, screen resolution, the time spent on the page, and mouse movements or touch events. This information is sent to Google.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| _GRECAPTCHA | Distinguishes humans from automated submissions | 6 months |
This site is protected by reCAPTCHA. Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply to their use of the information it collects.
If you decline these cookies, my forms may not accept your submission. You can always reach me by email at
Social and embedded content
Pages containing embedded content — for example an Instagram feed or a video — may allow that provider to set its own cookies. I do not control these. If you would like to know more, the relevant provider's own cookie policy will explain them.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies. The relevant settings are usually under Privacy or Security:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies
- Safari: Settings → Safari → Privacy & Security
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions
Blocking all cookies will affect how many websites behave, including this one. You can also opt out of personalised Google advertising at adssettings.google.com.
Do Not Track
Browsers vary in how they send "Do Not Track" signals and there is no agreed standard for responding to them, so I do not currently act on them. My cookie banner is the reliable way to tell me your preference.
Changes
I will update this page whenever the cookies I use change, and amend the date at the top.
