The last six months has seen me invest further in the business by buying new camera bodies & lenses. I purchased the new D300 in December 2007 and have strengthened the lineup considerably further with the acquisition of the amazing D3 camera in late March. These two cameras – the D3 in particular – will help enable me to get far better results than previously in low light situations indoor without flash due to the incredibly low amount of noise that the sensors produce
The ‘FX format’ (full frame) D3, features a 36 x 23.9 mm 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor as well as a vast array of new features which absolutely raise it another notch above previous single digit Nikon DSLRs. Important headline improvements include high sensitivity support by default, up to ISO 6400 with 25600 available as a boost option, 14-bit A/D conversion, a new standard image processor, a new shutter, new auto focus sensor, focus tracking by color, nine frames per second continuous, dual compact flash support, DX lens support (albeit at lower resolution) with automatic cropping and a 3.0″ 922,000 pixel LCD monitor (which it has to be said is lovely).
Two new lenses have also been purchased now that I have gone ‘full frame’ with the D3 – two fast superzooms. The 17-35mm f2.8 and the 28-70 f2.8 – these lenses, along with the 80-200mm f2.8 and the fast 50mm prime f1.4 complete the line-up of Nikon glass that I’ll be using on the D3.
